Biodiversity + Wildlife

Help protect and research Wildlife

Spend some time with Zooniverse

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Volunteer in my Community

I will volunteer 4 hours in my community.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Choose Renewable Energy

Renewable energy options are becoming more widespread and accessible. Not only are they good for the planet, they can help save money as well. I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option. If my utility does not offer one, I will contact them to advocate for this option in the future.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Weekly Meal Planning

One third of all food produced worldwide is wasted, and so is the energy it takes to produce and transport that food. I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need and eating what I planned each day.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Reduce Pollutants in Cleaning

Understanding cleaning product ingredients and their effect on water and biodiversity is helpful to our consumer choices. I will spend 60 minutes learning about how cleaning products affect our water and try making my own cleaning products to reduce pollutants.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Online Energy Audit

Energy use and waste is often invisible. I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate + Air

Calculate My Carbon Impact

Carbon emissions can show up in many surprising ways in our life. I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Reduce Animal Products

One kilogram of beef and cheese emits 71kg and 24kg of greenhouse gasses, while 1kg of rice, grains, and legumes emits between 2-4kg. Fruits, vegetables, and nuts emit less than 1kg per 1kg. I will reduce my climate impact by enjoying 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day this week.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Use Reusable Bags

Plastic bags can be mistaken for food by many wild animals and can end up in habitats that harm wildlife. I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Plastic in Clothing and Water

Synthetic clothing can contain plastic and shed harmful microplastics into our water. I will use a microplastics catcher in my laundry, or install a microplastics filter for my washing machine.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Save the Bees

Bees are vital to ecosystems. To help save the bees, I will learn which local flowers provide nectar and plant them in my backyard or in a pot on my balcony.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 60 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

It has been quite an eye opener to realize where we as people introduce plastic into our environment without even knowing it. Even where we can see it, it is hard to NOT add more plastic to your trash bin. It seems that literally just about EVERYTHING nowadays is wrapped or packaged in plastic and a trip to the grocery store can leave you with 20 or more bags (in the US) because your groceries are bagged for you and sometimes one bag is used for 1 (!) item, or even "double bagged". Add to that, containers, wrappers, and even things we need for our jobs, pens, staplers, folders and backpacks - all made of plastic materials that at some point will end up in a landfill. Through the challenge, I have definitely become more aware of all the plastic around me and realized that I cannot escape the use of plastic. I can only minimize and discard consciously. Here a few things I started to do. Phasing out plastic, re-usable containers for leftovers and replacing them with glass containers. Buy products wrapped in either carton or glass, such as milk or juice. Look for cosmetics and hair products that do not include synthetic polymers. Bring and use produce nets for the grocery store instead of using the supplied plastic wraps. Use compostable zip lock bags. Purchase wood or bamboo home products such as dishwashing brushes, cutting boards, brooms, kitchen supplies such as spoons, or whisks. NEVER use one-way anything or straws. Avoid takeout places that use plastic containers. Always bring your own shopping bags or ask for paper. I use the paper bags later as trash bags and to clean out my kitty litter boxes. My kids are grown but I have noticed the tremendous amount of plastic in toys, I would look for wood toys, things that can be used for a long time and passed down to someone else. DONATE, don't throw away. Buy used items, especially clothing and avoid Poly-anything in your clothes - almost impossible nowadays thanks to the spandex craze!! I am planning to install a laundry micro plastics filter for my washer. Finally, I pick up trash and especially plastic wherever I see it on the street or by the trail, dispose of it properly. Oh and off course, keep that metal, reusable water bottle wherever I go :)
