Melissa's actions

Land + Forests

Explore My Area

When we explore natural spaces around us, our connections with them change. I will spend 30 minutes exploring a new area around my neighborhood, office, or campus (e.g., park, water body, nearby trail, community garden, green space, etc.).

ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Borrow Before I Buy

Why buy something I will only use once or a few times if someone nearby has it for me to borrow, and why not share something I have that someone may only need a few times a year? To reduce my consumption and waste, I will create or support the sharing economy with friends, family, colleagues or neighbors.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

Declutter My Home Without the Landfill

Each day, I will learn about responsible ways to dispose of items and de-clutter, clean, donate, repurpose or recycle unneeded items in my home to make sure that what I get rid of doesn't go into the landfill.

DAILY ACTIONS

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Grow Local

I will research and plant a garden filled with native fruits, vegetables, and flowers to nurture local wildlife and ecosystems. I will find nearby nurseries that offer plants native to my area.

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

Share My "Why"

I will record a video to share why I am taking action this Earth Month, a sustainable swap I've made, and/or a local conservation effort in my area.

What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

A typical household may consume anywhere from 1 to 5 single-use plastic water bottles per day per person, depending on their lifestyle and preferences. This can add up to approximately 7 to 35 bottles per week for a family of four.

Our family about a year ago stopped purchasing single use water bottles and now use re-usable water bottles. The kids also either opt to use water fountains at school or carry a re-usable cups. It makes it easier when the middle schoolers are now perceived as "cool" to carry re-usable cups like the Stanley. When seeing the numbers of bottle consumed, I am happy our home made the switch.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate + Air Declutter My Home Without the Landfill
How did it feel to intentionally declutter with putting things into the landfill? What did you learn along the way about yourself and our consumer and waste systems?

Our family received gently used clothing from another family member. It's a satisfying feeling knowing that these clothes are getting another chance at usefulness, rather than being tossed away, which not only would be wasteful but also contribute to cluttering landfills.

Super excited to join the Eco-challenge again this year. I'm looking forward to learning new ways our family can change our daily lives to be more eco-friendly.
