Norah's actions

Biodiversity + Wildlife

Learn about Native Species

The world is full of unique species. I will spend 30 minutes each day learning what the native plants and wildlife are in my region.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

30 for 30 in Nature

Studies have shown that when we spend consistent time in nature, our health improves, our creativity increases, and our connection to the planet gets stronger. Each day of the Ecochallenge, I will spend 30 minutes outside (in a large or small patch of nature), then share my observations, reflections, and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Land + Forests

Zero Waste Day

The impacts of our waste are far reaching. I will create zero waste for an entire day and share my reflections and learnings on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land + Forests

Keep My Community Clean

At times it may not feel like it's up to us to keep our community clean and healthy, but we all have a role to play. Each day I am outside, I will pick up any litter I see.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

Itr's estimated over a billion water bottles are thrown away each year. Even if they were recycled, that still uses energy and resources from the earth. I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Freshwater + Oceans

Go Plastic-Free

Millions of tons of plastic is produced each year worldwide. Each day, I will conduct a plastics audit of what I buy and use throughout the challenge (kitchen, bathroom, personal care products, etc.), to see how single-use plastic shows up in my life. I will find plastic-free alternatives to these products and advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, product manufacturers, at work, or on campus.

I will sign up to the Sustainability Aficionados distribution list to receive global news on sustainability at Emerson, including world news and Greening OF, BY, and WITH news.

In Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, I learned about the Desert Rose (Adenium obesum), a native succulent shrub that grows to 1 to 3 meters in height and has vibrant red and pink flowers. The Red Acacia (Vachellia seyal) is another native species that grows to 6 to 17 meters tall and has medicinal properties, serving as a source of wood for making coffins, gum Arabic, and tanning material. The Charcoal Tree (Trema orientalis) is a flowering species in the cannabaceae family that supports various insects and birds, and its leaves and barks are used for medicinal purposes. The Arabian Bonatea (Bonatea steudneri) is a perennial herb native to Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and East Africa, and it has significant horticultural value due to its green to yellowish green spreading flowers with a strong fragrance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests 30 for 30 in Nature
What have you noticed about how it feels to spend consistent time outside?

Norah Al Atwah 4/01/2024 1:25 PM
Spending consistent time outside has a calming effect, reducing stress levels and promoting relaxation. Being surrounded by nature allows for increased self-awareness and introspection, potentially leading to improved emotional well-being. Regular outdoor activities can contribute to overall physical fitness and boost energy levels. Engaging in outdoor pursuits can foster a greater appreciation for nature and encourage a more conscious approach to resource conservation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Picking up litter connects you to your community through shared efforts, setting examples, fostering unity, and preserving the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Freshwater + Oceans Go Plastic-Free
Where did plastic show up on your life that surprised you the most? What plastic alternative products did you discover you may switch to?

    Norah Al Atwah's avatar
Norah Al Atwah 4/01/2024 1:05 PM
Plastic surprises were numerous, including toothbrushes, and household items like food wraps and cleaning cloths. I discovered alternatives like bamboo toothbrushes, and natural fiber cleaning cloths. Other options include wood or bamboo utensils, reef-safe sunscreen, reusable cutlery, coffee cups, and straws, and glass Tupperware.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Freshwater + Oceans Use a Reusable Water Bottle
What did you learn about the amount of plastic we consume and what actions will you take to reduce your use of plastic?

    Norah Al Atwah's avatar
Norah Al Atwah 3/31/2024 4:53 PM
The amount of plastic consumption is alarming as it contributes significantly to environmental pollution. To reduce my use of plastic, I planed to carry reusable bags, water bottles, and containers, avoid single-use plastics like straws and cutlery, and recycle properly.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land + Forests Zero Waste Day
What was hard about having a Zero Waste Day? What did you learn about yourself and your habits?

    Norah Al Atwah's avatar
Norah Al Atwah 3/31/2024 4:49 PM
Attempting a zero waste day is challenging due to identifying and avoiding single-use plastics, reducing food waste, managing personal care products, navigating work and social situations, and adopting new routines. Through this experience, I learned about consumer patterns, food consumption, personal care preferences, and social influences, ultimately gaining a deeper appreciation for their impact on the environment and committing to sustainable practices.

The reason for joining the challenge was to take advantage of a good opportunity to modify one's behavior towards more eco-friendly practices. This decision aimed at addressing negative impacts on the environment while balancing economic viability, social equity, and environmental protection - the three interconnected aspects of achieving a bearable, equitable, viable, and sustainable future. By prioritizing economic viability, we ensure financial stability and growth; by focusing on social equity, we promote fairness and inclusivity; and by prioritizing environmental protection, we safeguard our planet for future generations. This approach contributes positively to overall sustainability efforts.
